“A large battery electricity storage facility proposed for farmland near Oil City in Enniskillen Township has run out of juice after the municipal council declined to back the project.

Renewable Energy Systems Canada asked township council for its support for the proposal development after Ontario’s Independent Electrical System Operator (IESO), the Crown corporation overseeing the province’s electrical grid, put out a call for new battery energy storage systems to meet growing need during times of peak demand.

The company was optimistic about securing a deal with the IESO to build a large lithium-ion battery energy storage project near Oil City.

Mayor Kevin Marriott said township council voted against backing the project at a meeting earlier this month that was attended by a large number of residents who “voiced their opposition.”

The company had already secured a 12-hectare site for the project on a farm just east of Oil City, a small residential community in the central Lambton County township.”
