Langmaid Energy Storage
A snapshot of the proposal from Plus Power for their Langmaid Energy Storage Project.
Project Overview
The following is information extracted from Plus Powers Langmaid Energy Storage Website where they present the public details of this proposal. It can all be accessed in its original form through various hyperlinks on this page including this one here. We will do our best to ensure that any changes made on their site are accurately reflected here.
“Plus Power, LLC (Plus Power) is developing a state-of-the-art battery energy storage system that will hold up to 200 MW / 800 MWh to provide clean, firm capacity to Ontario’s electricity system. The Langmaid Energy Storage (Langmaid) project will enhance grid reliability by drawing and storing energy from the grid during off-peak periods and releasing it back to the grid when energy demand is at its highest. The Langmaid project is expected to provide significant benefits to Ontario’s ratepayers by reducing the need and cost associated with using gas-fired power plants during times of peak demand as well as helping to clean Ontario’s electricity system by optimizing the use of renewable energy resources.
Plus Power is a qualified applicant for the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) Long-Term 1 Request for Proposals (RFP) process. Plus Power intends to submit a proposal to the IESO in December of 2023 for the Langmaid project for a long-term capacity contract. If successful, Plus Power will proceed with the planning and environmental approvals, engineering, and construction of the project, with the objective of bringing the project online by 2027. We will work closely with IESO, the Municipality of Clarington and the community throughout the development, construction and operations and maintenance of the project.”

Project Location
The proposed location for the battery storage falls south of Regional Rd 3, west of Langmaid Rd, and North of Concession Rd 7. The site that Plus Power intends to purchase is roughly 140 acres, situated in the Greenbelt on prime agricultural land that is actively farmed, as well as ORM Environmentally Protected, and ORM Natural Linkage Area. The area they have proposed for the energy storage is roughly 12 acres and falls on or immediately next to areas of high aquifer vulnerability. Directly adjacent to the proposal area is where Harmony Creek (Headwaters) originates.
